What is a Mokoro?

A mokoro is a traditional canoe used in the Okavango Delta, primarily by the Bayei people of Botswana. Originally carved from tree trunks, modern mokoros are often made of fiberglass. Their narrow, shallow design allows them to glide through the delta’s waters, reeds, and lily pads with ease.

Polers guide mokoros by standing at the rear and using a long pole to push off the riverbed, navigating the delta’s winding channels. Mokoros are used for transport, fishing, and wildlife viewing, providing a quiet, eco-friendly way to explore the delta without disturbing its delicate ecosystem.

The mokoro has been vital to the Bayei and BaYei people for over 2,000 years. Initially made from hollowed-out trees, modern mokoros have evolved in design but remain a cultural and practical symbol for transport, fishing, and wildlife exploration in the delta.
